April 2025

Dr. Dave Lin, Associate Professor of Neurobiology, Coordinator of the CityU Hong Kong Joint PhD Program, and Director of Outreach Core for the Cornell Reproductive Sciences Center, recently made a generous donation from his CoRe outreach funds to Cornell University’s 38th Expanding Your Horizons (EYH) Conference. The one-day event, which took place on April 5, is an annual conference that encourages the next generation of scientists (students aged 13-17) to pursue careers in STEM through hands-on experiences, demonstrations, lab tours, talks, and more.

Though the scale of this event is difficult to capture in one news release, here’s a summary of EYH 2025 by the numbers:

  • 400: The approximate number of registrants for EYH
  • 20: The number of New York state counties that registrants visited from to attend
  • ~50%: The proportion of student participants whose participation was sponsored by the conference and/or transportation scholarships
  • ~30%: The proportion of participants who are students of color
  • 200: The approximate number of buddies, workshop leaders, demo presenters, and volunteers from across Cornell
  • 34: The number of volunteer-run workshops, including topics such as biology, mechanical engineering, plant science, robotics, forensic science, mathematics, genetics, computer science, animal science, ecology, chemistry, astronomy, chemical engineering, marine biology, renewable energy technology, psychology, fashion, fiber science, ornithology, programming, and microbiology
  • 10: The number of lab tours sharing Cornell’s world-class research facilities with students, including the Center for Nanofabrication, the Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source, the 3D printing facility, and the Animal Health Diagnostics Lab.
  • 10: Scientific demonstrations displaying scientific concepts such as fluid dynamics, classification of microbes under a microscope, and plant morphology

Expanding Your Horizons 2025 was a massive success made possible by its dedicated organizers and donations like Dr. Dave Lin’s. The Cornell Reproductive Sciences Center is proud to have been able to contribute to inspiring the next generation of scientific minds.
