Conservation Biology

Our Conservation efforts are focused on all aspects of the reproductive axis in endangered species. Studies in the Comizzoli lab, for example, focuses on the biology of gametes and gonadal tissues in different vertebrate species and experimental models (mainly the domestic cat).  The basic knowledge is then used to enhance natural breeding, develop cryopreservation protocols for germplasms, and implement assisted reproductive technologies (artificial insemination and in vitro fertilization).  Studies at the National zoo involve routine reproductive examinations on the zoo animal collection.  The main objective is to propagate small populations of rare and endangered species while maintaining a good genetic diversity.  The ultimate goal is the reintroduction of healthy individuals in their natural habitats.
